Jean M. Hammer

Jean Marie Hammer, 91, of Hamler, Ohio passed away Friday, March 29, 2019 at Kingsbury Place, Defiance, Ohio.
She was born December 8, 1927 in Hamler, Ohio to the late Henry & Mary (Mack) Erford. On May 14, 1949 she married Wilton "Bill" Hammer and he preceded her in death on March 28, 1987.
Jean was a Hamler High School graduate and valedictorian of her class. Along with her husband, they operated the former Hammer's Restaurant, Hamler, Ohio. When Patrick Henry Schools were consolidated, she became the first Food Service Supervisor of the school system. She then retired after 24 more years.
She was a lifelong member, loyal and faithful servant of St. Paul Catholic Church, Hamler. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing and adoring her grandchildren.
She is survived by daughters, Lana (Lee) Shingledecker, Defiance, Ohio; Lisa Marshall, St. Claire Shores, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Sue Hammer, Hamler, Ohio; grandchildren, Nick (Amber) Hammer; Jana (Justin) Coffin; Jill (Josh) Young; Bret Hammer (Kaitlyn Smith); Katy (Joe) Boots; Ty (Meghan) Shingledecker; Jay Shingledecker; Miranda Marshall (Antre Reid); Michael (Caitlin) Marshall; great grandchildren, Addyson; Maci; Landry; Vaughn; Madison; Caiden; Adalyn; brothers, Art (Mary) Erford, Hamler; Margaret Zachrich, Hamler; Eileen Reese, Deshler and Mary Ann (Jim) Gebers, Custar.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Gregory Hammer; sisters, Lenore Gerschutz; Marvelle Clausen and brothers, Mack, John and Reynold Erford.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Hamler with Fr. Nicholas Cunningham officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the mass at the church.
The family suggests memorials to Gregory Hammer Scholarship, St. Paul Catholic Church or Donor's Choice.
