Alfred "Al" Basselman
February 16, 1936 - November 2, 2022
Alfred “Al” Basselman, 86, of Deshler, Ohio passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 2, 2022 at the CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center surrounded by the comfort of his family.
He was born February 16, 1936 at his home to the late Herman and Augusta (Dickmander) Basselman. On July 29, 1956 he married Marilyn (Meyer) Basselman at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Hamler, Ohio.
Alfred was a graduate of Deshler High School. In his younger years, he worked for Koppenhoffer Bros. Poultry and then he worked as a foreman supervisor at General Motors, retiring in 1977. Al and his wife, Marilyn, were lifelong farmers and raised thousands of chickens, sometimes up to 72000 at a time. In his retirement years he enjoyed going camping and traveling.
He was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church, Deshler where he held many different offices and was a faithful and diligent steward of the church’s heating and cooling systems. He was also past president of the Henry County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; 3 daughters, Cindy (Archie) Carr; Debra (Steve) Dennie; Pat (Lance) Wray; 8 grandchildren, Kimberly (Mike) Lynch; Jennifer (Adam) Disbro; Nicole (Nate) Carter; Ben (Christy) Dennie; Tim (Andrea) Dennie; Samantha (Jon) Dorsey; Roxanne Johnson; Erik Johnson; 17 great grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rudolph Basselman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Deshler with Rev. James Wenger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery and a luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. on Friday at Feehan-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
The family suggests memorials to St. John Lutheran Church; CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice or the Corn City Fire District.
