Bonnie R. Shafer
March 19, 1935 – July 18, 2021
Bonnie Rae Shafer, 86, of Napoleon, Ohio passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones, Sunday evening, July 18, 2021.
She was born March 19, 1935 in Napoleon to the late George and Cora (Flint) Hill. On October 30, 1954 she married William “Bill” Shafer in Angola, Indiana and they shared over 58 years together before he preceded her in death on June 29, 2013.
Bonnie worked as a custodian at the former West School, Napoleon for 11 years and then as a cook at the former Country View Haven for over 6 years. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Napoleon; Elks Lodge #929; and the former AMVETS Post #1313.
Bonnie was a true matriarch to her family. A devoted wife, she was consistently by her husband’s side and over the years they enjoyed many trips and fun events with family and friends. At home she always made sure her lawn was cared for, her flowers were blooming and a coffee or pop was waiting for guests in her kitchen. In her free time, she liked to play cards, was very skilled at sewing and making quilts and baked the most delicious zucchini bread which she lovingly wrapped and gifted to her family.
It was important to Bonnie to have a loving home for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her greatest joy came when you visited her, especially when the great grandchildren showed up. She loved to care for the little ones and she will forever be their example of unconditional love.
She is survived by a daughter, Jayne Throne; son, William “Buster” Shafer; son-in-law, Robert Martinez; grandchildren, Tiffani (Jeremy) Shirey; Mandie (Art) Wells; Raechel (Mark) Feehan; Heather (Jason) Lane; Nick (Michelle) Leow; Kyle Shafer; Tyler Shafer; Aleesha Shafer; Shelby Shafer; 10 great grandchildren; Clayton; Mariah; Faith; Lillie; Kennedy; Whitney; Brynn; Mila; Abigail; Carter; sisters, Doris Ann Rippee; Janet “Skinny” Scott; brothers, Larry (Ruthie) Hill; Fred (Evelyn) Hill and sister-in-law, Mary Lee Hill.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patti Martinez and four sisters, Lois Mahnke; Shirley Boyett; Becky Martinez; Eunice Hill and two brothers, William Hill and Bernard “Hunky” Hill.
Honoring Bonnie’s wishes, a public graveside service will be held at 12 Noon, Thursday at Forest Hill Cemetery, Napoleon with Fr. Tim Krukowski officiating. A Celebration of Bonnie’s life and luncheon will follow at the Bert G. Taylor American Legion Post #300, Napoleon.
