Shirley Jane Mayer, 85, formerly of Toledo, Ohio passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 in Salem, Virginia.  She had been living with her daughter for over the past two years.

Shirley was born and raised in Deshler, Ohio to the late Orin Jay and Mildred (Jones) Oberlitner.  On August 16, 1958 she married Rudolf Mayer in Deshler and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1999.

Shirley graduated from Deshler High School and then attended the Toledo Hospital College of Nursing and the University of Toledo, where she got both her Bachelors and Masters degrees.  She worked at Parkview Hospital in Toledo, OH for many years. She then worked as a registered nursed with the Lucas County Board of MRDD at the Larklane Center, a division of Lott Industries. Shirley was an avid Gardner and avid reader.  She had a gentle and caring heart.  She mentored and advised many young growing health professionals, even after her retirement.  She was always an encourager for excellence.

She was a member of the Toledo Hospital Alumni Association; the UT Alumni Association; Toledo Zoological Society; Toledo Metro Parks Association and the Lott Industries Employees Union.

She is survived by a son, Orin (Rita) Mayer, Miami, Florida; daughter, Annette (Bob) Fielder, Blacksburg, Virginia; grandson, Nicholas Mayer, Miami, Florida; granddaughter, Stephanie (Duncan) Brown, Ann Arbor, Michigan and stepson, Rudy (Vivian) Brauer, Wintson Salem, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sheralee Lynne Fielder.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Feehan-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler, Ohio with Pastor Steve Wirzylo officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler.
